If ever there was a book that caused you to think deeply, this is one. Mankell speaks of his experiences with cancer, the disease that will inevitably lead to his death, but he doesn't fail to "live" as the months go by and the treatments progress. Hope for a "miracle cure" remain as they do with most, but reality is firmly in place. Along the way, he exams the truly extraordinary moments of his life and what they taught him.He also examines the seemingly mundane and their messages of importance.During this journey he brings us along as "hitchhikers" and enables us to share and even have first-hand experiences as we examine our own mortality and important revelations in our lives. The reader leaves the pages of Mankell's biography with a "smell the roses" vow.
Avery interesting memoir by a very interesting man. Markell, the writer of the Wallander books was diagnosed with lung cancer and is chronicalling his thoughts. While I haven’t finished the book yet, I’m amazed that he has remained an activist to the very end. He is concerned about nuclear waste that is going to be stored in Swedish caves for over 100 years. He is concerned about the veracity of that statement and that leads to an amazing travelogue of places he’s been that relate to cultures that have died. Of course the writing is impeccable and his mind is engaged in events and consequences outside himself and his illness. His inquisitiveness and activities in the face of his diagnosis is amazing!
Just started this, and wish I had someone to whom to read it aloud. Every word from this wonderful man rings true. So heartbroken that he is no longer with us. I own every one of his books and will treasure them the rest on my life. Don't miss him - he has poured his life and huge heart into his books, the ultimate gift of a writer.
I cried at learning he had died and read this book so I could keep something of him in my life. His stories exemplify the meaningful life he describes in the last book. His work is timeless but this tome precious in its description of what makes such a powerful and humble and fragile individual.
For me this is his best ever book. Revelation after revelation. His last hurrah! So very worth a read. Not a happy book but a brilliant one.
Henning was a very intelligent man, and I enjoyed thoroughly hearing about his concerns for the future. Even with translation, it was easy to read.He was a remarkable human being.
We read this wonderfully different book in a men's reading group. I am a major fan of Henning Mankell and his Kurt Wallander detective books (read them all) and was so surprised to learn he died. His plan was to continue the detective series with Wallander's daughter as the prime character and his last book introduced the her as the coming hero. I kept looking the next book. I turned to this final book with uncertainty. It is described as an autobiography and memoir -- but it is very different. It is a collection of Mankell's thoughts after he is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer but the illness is seldom mentioned and it is never the center of his thoughts. Also not mentioned is his Wallander detective novels. Nothing about how hwe came to write such a large body of work and become the best detecive writer. Mostly he explores his very ealy years as a playwrite and producer but nevber any detail. We do learn more about Mankell but in a very indirect way. I am more convinced than ever that Henning Mankell was a unique force for good.
Not as accessable initially as his first previous book but nevertheless captivating and profound. So worth sticking with the relatively disjointed introduction to enjoy the bizzarre and striking Renderings.
